*Why should I move from using the SOAP or AIM APIs to using the Amazon MWS API?
Amazon Marketplace Web Service (Amazon MWS) is Amazon’s newest API for sellers. It offers extensive documentation and support, and client libraries in Java, C#, and PHP, for the fastest and easiest way to integrate with Amazon. Amazon MWS supports seller API functions that are broader in scope and functionality than any APIs Amazon has previously offered sellers.

More about Amazon

Amazon.com is the largest online marketplace and has been online since 1995. Products sold include everything from books to electronics to clothing. Because a single product may have multiple sellers the goal is to offer the lowest price with the highest feedback rating and other factors to obtain the coveted buy box.

How does it work?

After creating an account, you can upload your inventory to Amazon.com as listings identified by a unique ID or ASIN. Amazon acts as a 3rd party, connecting you, the seller to the buyer—wherever they may be. Most commonly, the seller will ship the products to the buyer to complete the exchange.

Fulfillment by Amazon: When selling, there is the option for Amazon to store your inventory in their warehouses. When orders are placed, products are then shipped from the warehouse to the buyer, leaving you, the seller, worry free.

Fees:

Amazon charges a small monthly fee plus a percentage of each sale (usually 15%). Fulfillment by Amazon also includes fees for include inventory storage, order handling, pick and packaging as well as weight handling. You can find Amazon’s fee structure on their Fees and Pricing page for U.S. sellers and their Selling on Amazon Fee Schedule page for European sellers.

Items Sold:

Items you sell must fall into one of approximately 30 categories. Each category includes its own listing format (e.g., Jewelry includes fields like cut and clarity). Channergy can upload directly to any existing listing that has an ASIN. It can also create a file format for your specific category or categories so you can create new listings.

Approval: Some items sold on Amazon need approval before they’re listed. Many of these approval needed categories are high end or objects that buyers commonly have concerns about purchasing. This does not mean that they are restricted and not allowed to be sold but a seller must contact Amazon and fill out a short questionnaire to attain this permission. A list of items is available on their site as well as the appropriate links to get in touch with Amazon for the approval process.

Restricted: Like most e-commerce sites, restricted selling exists. A list of restricted items not allowed to be sold on Amazon is available on their site. As a consequence of listing a restricted item, there will be limits on listing privileges and a possible suspension of listing privileges.
